How to Make Sea Moss Gel at Home: Step-by-Step Recipe

What Is Sea Moss Gel?

Sea moss gel is made by soaking and blending raw sea moss (also called Irish moss or Chondrus crispus) into a smooth, nutrient-rich gel. It's one of the most versatile superfoods you can add to your wellness routine — used in smoothies, skincare, hair care, and cooking.

The quality of your sea moss matters enormously. Wildcrafted sea moss, like the kind AURANV sources from the clean waters of St. Lucia, is far superior to pool-grown varieties in both mineral content and purity.

What You'll Need

  • 1 oz (about 1 cup loosely packed) dried wildcrafted sea moss
  • Filtered water for soaking
  • 1–2 cups filtered water for blending
  • A high-speed blender
  • A glass jar with a lid for storage
  • Optional: lime juice or key lime for cleaning

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Rinse the Sea Moss Place your dried sea moss in a colander and rinse thoroughly under cold water to remove any sea salt or debris.

Step 2: Soak Overnight Transfer the sea moss to a large bowl and cover with filtered water. Add a squeeze of lime juice if desired. Let it soak for 12–24 hours. The sea moss will expand significantly and turn lighter in color.

Step 3: Rinse Again After soaking, drain and rinse the sea moss once more. It should feel soft and gelatinous.

Step 4: Blend Add the soaked sea moss to your blender with 1–2 cups of fresh filtered water. Blend on high for 1–2 minutes until completely smooth. Add more water for a thinner consistency.

Step 5: Store Pour the gel into a clean glass jar. It will thicken as it cools. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3–4 weeks, or freeze in ice cube trays for up to 3 months.

How to Use Your Sea Moss Gel

  • Add 1–2 tablespoons to smoothies, juices, or teas
  • Use as a thickener in soups and sauces
  • Apply topically as a face mask or hair treatment
  • Mix into desserts and puddings
