The History of Seamoss

Sea Moss, Key Lime & Alkaline Spring Water

Irish Moss got its name when it was made famous during the potato famine in Ireland in the 1800s. Because people were starving and desperate for food, they began eating the red alga that was on the rocks. As a result, the name stuck. This alga is also referred to as carrageen moss because of its high carrageen content. Since the 1800s, the Irish have been harvesting it from their rocky shores to use as medicine. Irish sea moss is a type of red algae found on the shores of the North Atlantic surrounding Ireland, Europe and North America. For hundreds of years, it has been used for medicinal purposes. Irish Moss was also used widely in the treatment of tuberculosis and pneumonia. In Venezuela it has been used for generations as a home remedy for sore throats and chest congestion, boiled in milk and served with honey before bed. The Irish Moss industry provides a unique way of life for those involved with the harvest on Prince Edward Island (Canada).

THE HISTORY OF DR. SEBI AND SEA MOSS:

Alfredo Darrington Bowman, better known as Dr. Sebi, was a Honduran self-proclaimed herbalist and healer. He also practiced in the United States for a period in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. In his time, he used to introduce various herbs and alkaline foods that were better for the body. He talked a lot about Sea Moss and its benefits.

Dry sea moss will remain unspoiled as long as it isn’t subjected to conditions that cause it to spoil. Keep it stored in a glass container that is well sealed and out of direct sunlight or moist, dark damp areas where microbes tend to flourish.

Sea moss gel will last up to 1 month as long as it is stored in a glass container and covered. We recommend making only what is needed and using that daily until the batch is finished to avoid any potential issues.
